Kenora and surrounding areas: deep frost with risk of snow showers
Many images of Kenora have been shared recently on social media. Here is an old postcard.

Arctic Air Grips Kenora, Grassy Narrows and Lake of the Woods

This morning, Kenora and surrounding areas are locked in a deep freeze at -20°C, with light snowfall. The northwest wind blowing at 22 km/h cuts to the bone, creating a wind chill of -31°C. The humidity is 82% and the barometric pressure rises by 103.2 kPa, announcing clearer but no less frigid days to come. Visibility extends up to 24 km, perfect for admiring the winter wonderland if you dare to venture outside.

Expect mostly cloudy skies today, with a 30% chance of snow showers early this morning. Winds will decrease to 15 km/h later and the maximum temperature will reach -17°C, although wind chills will persist around -30 this morning and a frigid -21 this afternoon. Frostbite is a real risk, so bundle up!

Tonight: partly cloudy and frosty

The sky will partially clear up tonight and the temperature will drop further to -22°C. Light winds up to 15 km/h will keep wind chills near -27°C. Again, frostbite precautions are a must for anyone outside for long periods of time.

The week ahead: cold days and clear nights

Thursday December 19
On Thursday, the sky will be alternating with sun and clouds, with a 30% chance of snow showers in the morning and early afternoon. The high will climb to -14°C, with wind chills of -26 in the morning and -19 in the afternoon. Another chilly day that calls for layered clothing!

The night brings cloudy periods with a 30% chance of snow showers and a minimum temperature of -22°C.

Friday December 20
The radiant sun returns on Friday, with temperatures of -17°C. The night promises clear skies and a new plunge to a freezing temperature of -26°C.

Saturday December 21
Saturday remains sunny but cold, with temperatures of -18°C. A clear night will bring temperatures down to -17°C. It’s another perfect day to stay warm indoors or brave the cold for some outdoor winter fun.

Weather history: Kenora’s extreme winters

On December 18, Kenora recorded a mild 1987 temperature of 6.1°C, a stark contrast to today’s Arctic cold. The record minimum of -36.7°C in 1983 reminds us of the harsh winters experienced by this region.

Dressing for the Arctic

Today’s icy conditions require maximum winter defenses. A thick, insulated parka, thermal gloves, a hat and waterproof boots are essential. Don’t forget to cover your face with a scarf or balaclava to protect yourself from frostbite caused by the biting wind.

Did you know?

The Lake of the Woods region is an ice fisherman’s paradise, even in these extreme conditions. The thick ice and crystal clear waters make it one of the best places for winter fishing in Canada, if you’re brave enough to brave the cold!
