How This Guy Lost 70 Pounds Using Tonal at Home

When Ruben Hernandez found himself in poor health and unhappy at age 38, this customer service dispatcher at a Franklin Park, Ill., office knew things had to change. He says he was “too lazy to go to the gym,” so he bought a gym to use at home – and lost 70 pounds and feels great. Here, in his own words, is how he did it:

IN 2022, I I was 38 years old and in very bad shape. I was overweight and life was a struggle. I had a huge beer belly and was out of breath from walking. I had a bad case of asthma when I ran a few blocks. And it was difficult to buy shirts because I was self-conscious about my big belly. It got so bad that I would come home from work and order a pan pizza, boneless wings, and a liter of coke for myself and eat it all in one sitting. I would feel like shit afterwards. So I had to change my life, otherwise I wouldn’t reach 40.

I wanted to work out and eat healthy, but I would just stop after a week and start indulging in food every day. I always thought eating less was the solution to losing weight, but that only made things worse and I would overeat when I got home from work. It was easier to eat unhealthy foods since it was cheaper to go to a fast food restaurant and enjoy what I ordered.

I was too lazy to go to the gym. But in June 2022, I purchased Tonal (a home workout system that uses digital weights, machine learning, and personalized workout programs). Using it, I did strength training 5 times a week and two days of cardio. It took me a few months to get used to the exercises and get used to eating much better. After a few months, I felt good and full of energy. I no longer felt lethargic and tired throughout the day.

Honestly, I can say that what really motivated me to change my life was Tonal Home Gym. This is very convenient, especially after a 12-hour work day. I had a subscription to Planet Fitness but was frustrated because too many people were using the machines and workout bench, which led me to invest in Tonal. I know this is a lot of money to spend, but it’s worth it.

Right now I’m strength training three times a week with two days of cardio. I’ve always wanted to do these Tough Mudder events and for the first time I feel like I’m going to make it a reality.

What worked for me

Start slowly.

AT FIRST, HE I struggled with not eating my favorite foods and not overindulging in food. I say it’s definitely not easy like the ads make it out to be. But start slowly and each week gradually increase your physical activity and eat healthier meals. Eliminate things little by little until you are comfortable eating in portions. It took me a while to find the perfect balance between not starving myself and not overeating. Currently, I eat small portions every two hours, incorporate protein into each meal, and drink water throughout the day. My sugar craving is gone, so thinking about seeing other people drinking sugary drinks doesn’t affect me at all.

Here and there you can have a cheat meal but do so without exceeding your daily calorie intake. It’s okay if you fail one day, but don’t make it a habit and you’ll be fine.

Trust the process.

You won’t see your progress overnight. I used to look in the mirror every day, but I was always disappointed. I stopped obsessing about it and before I knew it, I started noticing changes. Just be patient and you will see results.

Make sure you get enough sleep and rest.

This is a must because you need your body to rest and repair muscle tissue. You can take one to three days off per week. You don’t need to overexert yourself and risk serious injury.
