Rajya Sabha adjourns sine die

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday after the House passed a motion to appoint 12 members to Parliament’s joint committee on simultaneous polls.

When the House met this morning, it witnessed protests from Opposition MPs and was adjourned amidst din.

The Speaker also held a meeting with Leader of the House JP Nadda and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge along with leaders of various opposition parties in a bid to end the impasse in the House .

When the House reconvened at noon, the Speaker asked Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to move a motion to appoint members of the upper house to the joint committee of Parliament to examine the drafts of law linked to “one nation, one election”.

The motion was passed by a voice vote to appoint 12 members of the Rajya Sabha to the joint committee on simultaneous polls.

The President then delivered his concluding remarks, saying that the productivity of this session stood at only 40.03 percent with only 43 hours and 27 minutes of effective operation.

“As parliamentarians, we rightly receive harsh criticism from the people of India. These continued disruptions are gradually eroding public confidence in our democratic institutions,” he noted.

Lok Sabha adjourns sine die

Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday amid protests from the Opposition and Treasury benches against the alleged insult to BR Ambedkar and President Om Birla’s instructions to members against holding protests at any gate of the Parliament.

As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, the Speaker called on Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to introduce a resolution to set up a joint parliamentary committee to examine bills related to the principle ” one nation, one election.”

Slogans of ‘Jai Bhim’ echoed in the House as the Speaker read out the instructions banning demonstrations and protests at the Parliament gates.

As protests continued, the Speaker adjourned the House sine die.

Even before the proceedings of the House began, Congress members started raising slogans of ‘Jai Bheem, Jai Jai Bheem’.

Amidst slogans from the opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered the Lok Sabha chamber.

As Meghwal moved the resolution, Congress members led by Manickam Tagore took up the well-lifting slogans.

The protesting opposition members remained in the well while ‘Vande Mataram’ was played as per convention at the end of the parliamentary session.

Except the TMC, most members of opposition parties, including the DMK and NCP, joined the protest from their headquarters. Congresswoman Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was present in the House.
