When work to “improve” the Shrewsbury station roundabout will resume

Work to “enhance and improve” the roundabout area around Shrewsbury The station is currently closed for the holidays.

The area next to the station connects Castle Gates (A5191), Chester Street (A528), Smithfield Road (A458) and Cross Street (A528), as well as areas to the north and south.

Shropshire Council has announced that work will resume on January 6 and will include continued paving works and the introduction of new signs, poles, permanent traffic lights and street lighting.

This will involve installing temporary traffic lights to enable work to be carried out safely outside Antonio’s former barbershop.

Paving and curbing works will also be carried out on the new pedestrian crossings at Castle Foregate, Smithfield Road and at the station exit. A temporary pedestrian crossing in the street will also be installed.

Temporary traffic lights will be located at the Smithfield Road/Raven Meadows junction, Castle Foregate and the station exit – and permanent signals will be decommissioned. The work will be carried out as quickly as possible so that the traffic lights at the bus station intersection can become permanently operational again as quickly as possible.

This will then leave temporary signage in place at the station to undertake pedestrian crossing work.

Temporary signals will be monitored, as well as permanent signals when they are reactivated. The council says this is to minimize congestion and queue lengths as much as possible.

This phase of work is expected to be completed by the end of January 2025 and further updates will be released for ongoing phases until the project is fully completed.

The “station quarter” works – carried out by local company McPhillips Ltd on behalf of Shropshire Council – are funded by the government and are expected to be completed by summer 2025.
