Stephanie Stanton and Linda Carson discuss Midnight Pass

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – One of the biggest stories of the year was the natural reopening of Midnight Pass by Hurricane Helene.

Seeing the tidal connection between the Gulf of Mexico and Little Sarasota Bay open after Hurricanes Helene and Milton is cause for celebration for many local residents.

“In the last 40 years, we haven’t had something that we’ve had for 100 years,” said Dave Tomasko, executive director of the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. He adds that two owners closed Midnight Pass in the 1980s.

Hélène caused the reopening of Midnight Pass. Some say it was an “act of God.”
