UM says there is no compromise for perpetrators of sexual harassment

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no compromise for perpetrators of sexual harassment at Universiti Malaya (UM), says Professor Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman.

The university vice-chancellor said UM takes the issue of sexual harassment seriously and will ensure that prompt action is taken against offenders, irrespective of their position or status.

“We at the university have been informed of the case involving a professor who is currently the subject of a police investigation. We are ready to provide our full cooperation to the authorities in assisting them with the investigation,” he said. he declared.

He said an internal investigative committee would be established, adding that this would require solid evidence to begin with.

Professor Noor Azuan then said anyone with information – especially victims – should come forward to help resolve the issue immediately.

“As a public institution, UM will not compromise to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff and the entire campus community,” he said.

“However, we must comply with all laws and regulations when handling each complaint to ensure that it is handled fairly and equitably. We will continue to ensure that the university environment remains safe, fair and conducive to all,” he added.

Professor Noor Azuan then said their commitment to monitoring “sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment” at UM includes using a QR code to address these issues.

“This code has been revised and improved with input from various parties, including student and union representatives, anti-sexual harassment NGOs, police and lawyers.

We have a whistleblower policy to encourage the reporting of inappropriate behavior, including sexual harassment,” he said.

He added that UM, through its Department of Student Affairs and Integrity Unit, has implemented various programs and activities to raise awareness on this issue.

UM offers the same platform on its website (https://umintegrity.um.edu.my) to help victims come forward and report incidents of sexual harassment so that action can be taken accordingly.
