Norwich opens new warming shelter for residents in extreme cold

NORWICH, Conn. (WFSB) – As temperatures plummet, emergency warming shelters have been opened in several communities to protect vulnerable populations from harsh winter conditions.

The No Freeze Shelter opened its doors on Saturday to provide a safe and warm space for homeless people in Norwich.

The newly renovated building marks a milestone for the city, providing much-needed relief to residents who have long struggled to access shelters in neighboring New London.

Gov. Ned Lamont activated the state’s severe weather protocol at midday Saturday, a measure designed to provide emergency shelter in cases of extreme cold.

This is the first time this winter that the protocol has been implemented.

The Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) operates the No Freeze Shelter, which will remain open whenever the severe weather protocol is in place.

Saturday evening was the shelter’s first night of operation, providing refuge not only to the homeless but to anyone needing protection from the cold.

“When you add it all up and think about the logistics of getting people from the greater Norwich area and getting them to New London, it’s just not feasible,” said TVCCA Executive Director Josh Kelly.

Local residents expressed their gratitude for the new shelter.

Norwich resident Juliza Lopez shared her relief, saying: “A lot of people are homeless here and need it. »

Although the No Freeze Shelter is only open during severe cold spells at the moment, it is hoped that it will one day become a permanent fixture in the community.

The severe weather protocol is set to end at noon on Tuesday, but for now, the No Freeze Shelter offers a vital lifeline to those who need it during this harsh winter season.

For more information on shelter opening hours and how to access services, residents are encouraged to contact Thames Valley Council for Community Action.
