Kolkata Airport set to expand to 100 destinations and nearly double passenger capacity with new terminal

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is set to undergo a transformative upgrade, aiming to establish itself as a global hub for international flights.

Announcement the ambitious plans during the airport’s centenary celebrations, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu said, “We envision making Kolkata Airport one of the largest and most advanced in the country. »

Currently serving flights to 15 international and 49 domestic destinations, the airport will soon expand to operate flights to 100 destinations daily.

The government plans to increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 2.6 crore to 4.5 crore by constructing a new terminal, expected to be completed by November 2025.

Daily flight operations have already increased from 264 to 400, which is a testament to the focused efforts of the government and its collaboration with that of West Bengal.

Highlighting the historical importance of the airport, Minister Naidu noted, “Calcutta Airport was the scene of India’s first night landing in 1924 and has long been a gateway connecting Kolkata to the world . »

He further highlighted that the redevelopment pays homage to this heritage while positioning the airport as a cornerstone of the future of Indian aviation.

Along with improved passenger processing efficiency and world-class infrastructure, innovative amenities such as the budget-friendly ‘Udaan Yatri Café’ have been introduced, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

The government is also prioritizing the development of other airports in West Bengal, including Bagdogra, Andal and Coochbehar. Bagdogra Airport, strategically located near the ‘Chicken Neck’ in Siliguri, will receive substantial investments due to its crucial importance for economic activities and national security.

TMC MP and Chairman of the Airports Advisory Committee Sougata Roy stressed the need to increase the number of international flights and improve facilities, adding that such progress would “stimulate economic growth, create jobs and make airports and centers of economic activity”.

The 17 MW solar power plant at Kolkata Airport underlines the government’s commitment to sustainable development, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the facility.

This is in line with plans to increase the number of airports in the country from 158 to 208 over the next five years.
