Winter weather warning issued before Christmas

The weather forecast for the next few days seems to indicate that we will finally see a white Christmas. The National Weather Service is warning Oneida County. We go from freezing temperatures to heavy snow and slippery roads.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter weather warning for northern and southern Oneida counties, including Utica, Rome and Boonville. The advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. tonight (12/23/24) until 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 24.

As a result of this advisory, residents should expect snow accumulation between 3 and 6 inches, with the heaviest snowfall occurring between midnight and 7 a.m. Tuesday. Snowfall is expected to ease Tuesday morning and continue lightly into the early afternoon.

The weather advisory also warns drivers in central New York. Slippery roads are expected, which could have a significant impact on travel Tuesday morning. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and allow extra travel time.

“Snow removal teams will be deployed in full, but conditions could remain dangerous, particularly on secondary roads and during the first hours of the storm,” local authorities warned.

To get the latest updates on road conditions, drivers can call 511 or visit their state’s Department of Transportation website. Residents are also encouraged to prepare by ensuring vehicles are equipped with winter essentials, keeping their phones charged and staying up to date with the changing weather.

Stay tuned to WIBX and weather apps for the latest updates. Make sure you stay safe this holiday season and enjoy what will most likely be a white Christmas.
