Temperatures in Michigan are expected to warm up this week, but it’s a safe bet that Gaylord-area Michiganders won’t soon forget the record low of minus 21 degrees recorded Sunday morning.

Northern Michigan experienced a cold start to winter over the weekend, with snow on the ground and temperatures falling below freezing across a wide area, the Gaylord Office of the National Weather Service said.

Gaylord’s record marked the official start of winter, which occurred Saturday with the winter solstice.

Here’s what you need to know.

What was the record at Gaylord?

Gaylord reached a low of minus 21 degrees Sunday, the record low for that day, the weather service said.

What was the previous December 22 record for Gaylord?

The previous record for December 22 was minus 10 degrees in 1989.

What other lows has northern Michigan experienced?

Northern Michigan experienced a cold Sunday, with sub-zero temperatures across the region, the weather service said. Here are Sunday’s temperatures in a few other locations:

  • Alpene: minus 5
  • Gladwin: minus 10
  • Shadow: minus 16
  • Harbor Springs: minus 9
  • Indian River: minus 12

When will Northern Michigan get this cold again?

Gaylord was under a winter weather advisory until 1 p.m. Monday, with a 90% chance of snow, an accumulation of 5 inches and highs in the upper 20s, the NWS said. Temperatures will warm into the 30s midweek, including Christmas, and continue to climb into the 40s on weekends.

NWS Outlook 6-10 predicts above normal temperatures for Michigan and much of the Midwest through January 1.
