Malaysian university suspends professor following sexual harassment allegations

Universiti Malaya (UM) has suspended a professor following allegations of unsolicited nude photos sent to several students, in the latest issue that has rocked the campus of Malaysia’s top public university.

Students led by the UM Feminist Club staged a protest last Friday demanding swift action from the university after a complaint was filed with campus management regarding allegations of sexual harassment by the from a member of its academic staff.

UM said Monday that the professor was suspended in accordance with its commitment to maintaining its zero-tolerance policy for professional misconduct within its walls.

“Universiti Malaya will continue to ensure that its campus environment remains safe and conducive, including taking strong action against any party involved in misconduct, regardless of their position or status,” said l university in a press release.

Earlier, the Ministry of Higher Education had said that UM had taken immediate steps to initiate an investigation after receiving the complaint.

The ministry assured the public that the university management has followed the necessary procedures and guidelines in handling cases of sexual harassment to ensure that the rights of all parties involved are protected.
