NIA charges two in terrorism case linked to banned group Hizb ut-Tahrir

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against two accused, Abdul Rehman, also known as Abdul Rahman, and Mujibur Rehman, also known as Mujibur Rahman Altham Sahib, in a case of terrorist conspiracy linked to the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT).

The charge sheet, submitted to the special NIA court at Poonamallee in Chennai, accuses the duo of violating sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) . The NIA alleged that they conspired to promote HuT ideology and planned terrorist acts in Tamil Nadu and other places.

According to the NIA, the accused worked with the so-called HuT leaders to propagate the group’s goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate in India. They reportedly sought to enforce a constitution based on Sharia law, drafted by HuT founder Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani.

According to the investigation, the accused actively recruited students in secret HuT classes, organized religious sessions and created short films promoting the organization’s anti-India ideology on social media.

They also allegedly organized an exhibition showcasing the military strength of Islamic nations, with the aim of inciting a violent overthrow of the Indian government through jihad.
