EC releases world's largest election dataset for 2024 Lok Sabha and 4 assembly polls; points to remember

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India published Thursday the largest election dataset for the 2024 Lok Sabha and four state Assembly polls held this year.
The move was aimed at boosting “public confidence” in the country’s electoral system at a time when the opposition has raised doubts about its credibility after changing its rules to restrict public access to CCTV footage of polling booths and other electoral documents.
“This suo moto initiative aims to strengthen public trust which forms the bedrock of India’s electoral system,” the election body said in the statement.
“The release of expanded datasets is also part of the Commission’s policy towards maximum disclosure, greater transparency and accessibility of election-related data for all stakeholders, including academia , research and the general public”, adds the text.

Here are the key takeaways from the report:

  • According to the data, the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 set a world record with 64.64 crore voters casting their ballot. The number of applications submitted increased to 12,459, compared to 11,692 in 2019. In addition, 8,360 candidates are in the running this year, compared to 8,054 in 2019.
  • The report highlighted that the participation of female voters exceeded that of men, marking a significant shift towards greater emancipation of women. The participation rate of women reached 65.78%, slightly higher than the 65.55% of men. In addition, the number of female candidates for elections increased to 800, compared to 726 in 2019.
  • The data reveals a significant increase of 46.4% in the number of third gender voters compared to 2019. In 2024, the number of registered voters for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) reached 90,28,696, up from 61,67,482 in 2019. In addition, a new vote took place in only 40 polling stations (0.0038% of the total 10.52 lakh offices), a sharp decline from 540 stations in 2019.
  • 3,921 independent candidates presented themselves, of which only 7 were elected. 3,905 independent candidates lost their deposit. Independent candidates obtained 2.79% of the total valid votes. 279 independent candidates ran in the elections.
  • Assam’s Dhubri parliamentary constituency recorded the highest turnout at 92.3%, while Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar recorded the lowest turnout at 38.7%, a significant improvement from 14.4% in 2019.
  • The Election Commission reported that more than 1.19 lakh overseas Indian voters were registered this year, including 1.06 lakh men, 12,950 women and 13 of the third gender, an increase from to the 99,844 overseas voters in 2019. These voters are Indian citizens living abroad for various reasons. but remain eligible to vote in India.
  • Six national parties participated in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, securing 63.35% of the total valid votes.
  • Surat, Gujarat was the only constituency with an uncontested election.
