Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson set to enter 2025 season on historic roster

Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson will enter the 2025 season in historic company, thanks to playing in 620 consecutive games during his career.

Sarah Langs of MLB.com reflected on the importance of this accomplishment in an end-of-year review.

The only other streaks of at least 600 consecutive games to start in the divisional era (since 1969) are, of course, Cal Ripken Jr. from 1982 to 1998 (2,632 games), as well as Steve Garvey from 1975 to 1983 ( 1,207), 2000. -07 Miguel Tejada (1,152), 1978-83 Pete Rose (745), 1981-86 Dale Murphy (740), 1973-78 Rose (678) and 1969-73 Sandy Alomar Sr. (661).

Olson hasn’t missed a game since May 2, 2021, meaning his streak spans three full seasons and changing. While that’s a far cry from Ripken’s record-breaking consecutive game streak, it’s pretty incredible for today’s game. In a league where players rest frequently in order to stay at peak levels, Olson simply doesn’t do it.

Additionally, Olson has managed to stay remarkably healthy, which is also an incredible feat.

Olson is now 30 years old and is coming off a year in which he hit .247 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. He posted a .333 on-base percentage for the Brave, who advanced to the National League playoff round.

Olson is a two-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glover and Silver Slugger. He hit a career-high 54 home runs for the Braves in 2023. That led all of baseball, and he also led baseball in RBI that year with 139.
