Expert Tips for Longer, Thicker Eyelashes

Whether you consider yourself a beauty veteran or a beginner, you’ll definitely appreciate these expert tips for keeping your lashes long, healthy, and strong. After all, gorgeous eyelashes never go out of style. To this end, we exploited Danielle Maldonadofounder of Hello Hello, a Mexico City-based studio specializing in lash lifts and brow lamination, to share her lash tips.

What is the best way to take care of your eyelashes?

We apply all kinds of products to our hair to make it soft and nourished, but we often forget to give the same care to our eyelashes and eyebrows. “Lashes need to have their own care routine to look great,” says Maldonado. The first thing is to reinforce them: “I like to apply Lancôme Lash Booster Eyelash Revitalizing Serum which repairs damage, prevents falling and stimulates their growth,” she says.

The best way to moisturize eyelashes?

Moisturizing is the other step you can’t skip in your routine because it helps keep lashes healthy. “My recommendation will always be Beary Chococare, which contains antioxidants and amino acids that deeply nourish, especially after a lash lift.” Other ways to hydrate? Vaseline, Aquapor or castor oilall of which have moisturizing effects. Apply before bed to enjoy the benefits of silky, stronger lashes.

Does Vaseline help eyelashes grow longer?

In a word, no. But moisturizing your lashes with Vaseline or Aquaphor can help them look more lush. It can also nourish them, which helps prevent breakage in the long run and, therefore, can help make lashes appear longer. For a petroleum-free alternative, apply castor oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or argon oil to lashes with a spoolie before bed. Or try a pro-peptide serum formulated with biotin. Eat a diet rich in healthy fats and proteins:like the one recommended for strong hair– will also help lashes look their best.

How to get longer eyelashes

If you weren’t lucky enough to be born with naturally long eyelashes, you don’t have to rely solely on extensions. Products, like Latisse, which contain an ingredient called prostaglandin, have been specially formulated to help eyelashes grow longer. “Prostaglandin is the only ingredient that guarantees long-term eyelash growth,” says Maldonado. “But despite its potential, it may cause allergies or side effects in some people. So I recommend testing the product for a few days to make sure you are ready to use it.”

For this ingredient to be truly effective, consistency is key. Although its application lengthens the eyelashes and prevents them from falling out, as soon as you stop applying it, the effect ceases. So this product is not for you if you are not willing to dedicate time to this step in your skincare routine.

What is the best way to curl your eyelashes?

According to Maldonado, your eyelashes’ worst enemy is eyelash curler. Sorry, but she says you may need to rest to prevent your lashes from falling out, especially if you’re the type who doesn’t leave the house without using it. “I prefer to apply a waterproof mascara as MAC Black Stack from MAC Cosmeticswhich is strong enough to hold lashes without the need for a spoon or curler,” says Maldonado. “However, the best option will always be a lash lift, which is a great way to keep lashes open without having to curl them or use a spoon.”

How does an eyelash lift take place?

An eyelash lift is a treatment that lengthens and enhances the curvature of the eyelashes. Although a good treatment can take up to 2 hours, the end result is worth it. The technique creates a more open appearance to the eyes and keeps lashes curled for up to eight weeks.

Lash enhancement requires engaging in some post-treatment care: you brush your lashes thoroughly after showering or washing your face, and avoid using mascara daily. “Never use eyeliner even if you feel like your lash lift duration is about to end,” suggests Maldonado.
