Portland police responded to reports of a fire at a ballot box on Monday around 3:30 a.m. local time. Multnomah County Elections Division Security responded and extinguished the fire, officials said.

“Officers determined that an incendiary device was placed inside the ballot box and used to start the fire,” the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.

The extinguishing agent helped prevent further damage and protected “virtually all of the ballots,” although three of them were damaged, the Multnomah County Elections Division said in a statement. press release.

Election officials will contact the three affected voters so they can receive replacement ballots, the division said.

“We have several systems and security measures in place to ensure your vote is secure,” Multnomah County Elections Director Tim Scott said in a statement.

The Portland Fire Investigation Unit is investigating.
