The Alouettes extend quarterback Alexander for three years: “Entrust him with leadership of the team”

The Montreal Alouettes have signed quarterback Davis Alexander to a three-year contract that extends through the 2027 season.

Alexander is now set to step up as the team’s starting quarterback, while Cody Fajardo’s future with the club appears to be uncertain.

“At only 26 years old, Davis is the future of this franchise,” Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia said in a team release. “This season he was called upon to play some crucial matches with us, and he responded very well under pressure. He learned from Cody Fajardo for two years and is ready to take the next step. We are now entrusting him with the management of the team and we have full confidence in him.

Alexander has completed 105 of 151 passes this season for 1,347 yards and six touchdowns and two interceptions while serving as Fajardo’s backup. He also totaled 166 yards and three touchdowns.

Fajardo totaled 3,105 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Alouettes, who had a league-best 12-5-1 record this season but lost in the Eastern final to the Toronto Argonauts.

The 32-year-old veteran remains under contract through next season, although it is unclear whether he will return in a backup role.

“Sometimes having two incredibly talented quarterbacks is not a good thing because it divides people. This divides fans. It divides the guys in your locker room,” Fajardo said of the situation earlier this month. “I have every confidence in coach (Jason) Maas and Danny and them to make the right decision, whatever decision that means.”

“I feel like I’m playing the best ball of my career, even if people think otherwise,” he added. “A lot can change in the CFL moving forward, but I’m excited to have at least one more opportunity to right your wrongs next year.

“I expressed my feelings (to management), how much I want to be the quarterback of this organization and how I feel like I can still play at a level talented enough to win us the Gray Cup. »
