827 unrecognized schools in Kerala, survey reveals, actions to follow

Kerala conducted a state-wide survey on unrecognized schools, the results of which revealed that 827 institutions operate outside the formal education system. General Education Minister V Sivankutty shared this update, promising further action in the coming weeks.

The survey highlights a significant number of schools operating without appropriate recognition. “A meeting has been called by the chief minister to discuss the matter, and a list of schools along with available details will be given to him,” the minister said.

Authorities are now preparing to reach out to these establishments to ensure compliance with education regulations.

MEASURES TO PROTECT THE WELL-BEING OF STUDENTS

The Minister of Education also highlighted measures to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for students. He stressed that activities negatively affecting students’ physical or mental health, such as body shaming, would not be tolerated.

Additionally, teachers and schools are instructed to avoid discussing issues such as waiting transportation or other costs in the classroom.

These questions should instead be communicated directly to parents, especially since most now have mobile access.

GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL EXCURSIONS AND CELEBRATIONS

Concerns about school trips and celebrations have also been raised. Sivankutty criticized the the high costs of some excursions, which often exclude economically disadvantaged students.

He directed that travel must be affordable and inclusive, with expenses for accompanying teachers and PTA members covered by the PTA or personnel management committees.

Personal celebrations, such as birthdays, are also under surveillance. Reports suggest that students are being pressured to bring gifts, and that some are being discriminated against if they don’t. The minister asked schools to immediately end these practices to reduce the financial burden on families.

The director of public education has been asked to submit a report on the measures implemented within a week.
