McTominay goal gives Napoli victory over Serie A leaders Turin as Lazio lose ground

MILAN — Napoli won 1-0 in Turin to ensure they end the weekend still on top of a tight Serie A table, while at least one of their opponents dropped points on Sunday.

Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game in the first half as Napoli pulled away from one of their closest rivals as Lazio lost 3-1 to relegation-threatened Parma.

Lazio remained on 28 points with Atalanta, Inter Milan and Fiorentina, while Napoli moved to 32. However, the other three teams will have a chance to narrow the gap.

Fiorentina host Inter later on Sunday, while Atalanta play Rome on Monday.

It was an entertaining match in Turin where Napoli broke the deadlock in the 31st minute. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia kept possession as he headed into the box from the left before passing the ball back to McTominay for the Scotland midfielder to head towards the near bottom corner.

Torino should have equalized almost immediately when Saul Coco just had to put the ball into an empty net from close range but fell on it instead.

Napoli had plenty of chances to extend their advantage but Vanja Milinkovic-Savic was in impressive form in the Torino goal.

Surprise loss

Lazio’s seven-game winning streak ended with a draw against Ludogorets in Europa League midweek and things were worse on Sunday as they fell to their first defeat since October.

Lazio had two goals disallowed and a penalty revoked after a VAR check in a frustrating first half for the visitors.

Parma moved four points clear of the drop zone with victory.

Vieira’s first victory

Patrick Vieira recorded his first victory as Genoa coach with a 2-0 victory at Udinese, who played almost the entire match with 10 men.

Udinese defender Isaak Touré’s match lasted just 120 seconds before he was sent off for elbowing Genoa’s Alessandro Zanoli in the face.

Andrea Pinamonti put Genoa ahead in the 13th minute and a second-half own goal from Udinese defender Lautaro Giannetti all but sealed the result.

Vieira was brought in during the international break to replace the sacked Alberto Gilardino, and his debut last week ended in a 2-2 draw against Cagliari.
