Toilet paper manufacturer applies to expand Telford site

Northwood Hygiene lodged an application with Telford and Wrekin Council last week which would see the company’s warehouses and offices expanded by around 14,700 square metres.

The £750,000 scheme is a revival of an outdated 2019 proposal which was approved by Telford and Wrekin council, with applicants Norpap Property saying the updated application is now designed to implement the same development in two phases.

According to supporting documents submitted with the proposals, the company plans to add additional storage space and loading docks in its warehouses, as well as provide up to 40 additional desks for its office staff.

The document states that the expansion of the company’s existing premises is necessary to meet its “growing needs”, with a knock-on effect on the number of loading bays and storage space required. The company says between 30 and 40 jobs could be created through this expansion.

“The proposed development includes an extension to the existing main building to accommodate the expanding business, providing additional storage space and loading bays, as well as an office extension which will house an additional 30 to 40 offices and employees,” indicates the press release.

“It consists of extensions to both sides of the existing building, with the L-shaped western extension positioning the building closer to the entrance to the existing site.”

“The proposed extension will encompass the area on the western edge of the site currently occupied by one smaller industrial unit, whilst the two smaller units on the eastern boundary will remain on site. The existing portion of the property will continue to have a manufacturing element. “, adds the press release.

“The only difference between the proposed development and the previously approved project is that this application seeks to phase the development.”

Over the past five years, Northwood, which employs 1,100 people across its 10 UK sites, has seen sales rise to 26 million cases a year, with gross turnover increasing from 236 million pounds to £493 million in the same period. Founded in 1974, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Telford and Wrekin Council’s planning department will decide on the project in due course.
