Courier Journal Silence & Secrets examines child sexual abuse by coaches

A string of Kentucky school coaches accused of inappropriate sexual conduct with players and other students has led the Courier Journal to examine how often these cases occur in the commonwealth and what is being done to stop them.

Through an extensive search of media and court records, the newspaper found at least 80 cases of alleged sexual misconduct against children by Kentucky middle and high school coaches over the past 15 years.

The Courier Journal also found that efforts to reduce the problem through better training of students and greater accountability for coaches and other school employees have consistently failed at the hands of lawmakers in Frankfurt.

And this while many other states are adopting prevention measures.

Our four-part Silence & Secrets investigation focuses on cases across the Commonwealth – from Prestonsburg to Paducah to Louisville.

Sexual abuse by coaches is a statewide problem, but it’s also a national problem, one that thrives on the silence of children and the secrets of abusers.
