Kai Tak Sports Park prepares for 2 weekend drills as new minister promises smooth March debut

Hong Kong’s soon-to-open Kai Tak Sports Park will hold two exercises over the weekend as the new tourism minister pledged to ensure a smooth start of the mega-infrastructure.

The park’s 10,000-seat indoor Kai Tak Arena will host a test event with two basketball games on Saturday.

A Sunday exercise involving 12,000 people will assess transport arrangements for both the arena and the nearby 5,000-capacity youth sports ground, including special bus routes and taxi drop-off points.

Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, the new secretary for culture, sports and tourism, stressed on Thursday that it is essential to ensure careful preparation of the Kai Tak Sports Park before its opening in March.

“(Preparedness) involves a series of tests at different scales and scenarios to ensure all stakeholders conduct early exercises and have contingency plans,” Law said.

“We must also organize the National Games well, allowing Hong Kong national athletes and competitors to show their abilities and helping to foster a stronger sense of national identity among Hong Kong residents.”
