A pinecone-like clump in a Christmas tree is a sac of praying mantis eggs

Always examine Christmas trees before you buy them, otherwise you could have one of the grossest experiences of your life. If you already have one, it’s time to become Sherlock Holmes with your tree so you can stop it before it blooms.

You’re looking for a brown clump that looks like a pine cone. Whether you have already decorated your tree or not, take the time to look. It’s easy for them to blend in and be mistaken for pine cones unless you know what you’re looking for.

These strange brown clumps are filled with 100 to 200 praying mantis eggs, and the last thing you want is to see that egg sac hatching inside your home during this magical time of year. Don’t worry-according to National geographic, They are not harmful to humans, but they can be annoying and disgusting if you have them all over your house.

According to Taste of homeIt’s rare, but it’s real, so it’s best to examine your tree. Taste of Home says you don’t need to throw away your tree if you haven’t checked it before buying or cutting it down. Instead, you can simply cut off this branch if you find a brown clump and place it outside where the eggs can hatch safely.

Or if you’re more comfortable, call an exterminator in case you’re worried some have already hatched.

Even the National Christmas Tree Association says a number of different insects and spiders have been found in Christmas trees after they have been put up, including these praying mantis bags, so it’s always best to investigate your tree and pass the vacuum around our tree daily.

If necessary, household insect sprays specifically labeled for indoor use on ornamental plants and evergreens can also be used, following label directions. It is important to turn off and unplug all tree lights before applying sprays to your Christmas tree.

The National Christmas Tree Association recommends shaking your tree outside one more time after you bring it home.
