Forget Nvidia Shield! Valve’s Sequel to Steam Deck Could Be a TV-Based Streaming Box for Gamers

While a Steam deck 2 is still years away, Valve may have something else up its sleeves: a new SteamOS streaming device. And this “Steam Box” seems to go hand in hand with the Nvidia‘s much-loved Shield TV device.

A Reddit post (spotted by XDA Developers) indicates that Valve is testing a new device with similarities to Google ChromeOS hardware, with changes made Steam Deck Code presenting tests for HDMI CEC. This already indicates a streaming device, given that an HDMI output would connect to a TV. Plus, if it runs on SteamOS, there will likely be plenty of games on it.

The post also refers to the device which will be based on a platform named “AMD Lilac”, which generally appears to use an AMD 8540U chipset, according to Geek bench. Compared to OLED Steam Bridgeequipped with a custom AMD Zen 2, this new SteamOS streaming device would come with plenty of power.

As the article suggests, the similarities to ChromeOS could indicate that the SteamOS streaming device also supports Android TV apps, which would make it a new device capable of streaming shows and playing games through Steam.

Currently, this is all just speculation, as this chip might just be a prototype and not the actual chip used on this supposedly device. However, this could give the Nvidia Shield TV a run for its money, and since it hasn’t seen much competition since its release in 2019, a new “Steam Box” could be a game-changer.

Valve’s SteamOS has been making waves on the Steam Deck, so much so that many have started running it on other gaming handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally.

Luckily, the company has confirmed that it will support more Windows 11 gaming handhelds with the operating system, but we should also see more devices coming with a “Powered by SteamOS” badge.

While it’s unclear when this “Steam Box” will be announced or if it will come out of the woodwork, it could be one of those devices that Valve will stick this badge on – and many more.

The Nvidia Shield TV has yet to see a product update since its launch in 2019, but it remains one of the best streaming devices you can input to play. If Valve is hot on its heels with a brand new SteamOS streaming device, it may not hold the crown much longer. Additionally, with SteamOS Ultimately As it comes to more devices, we could see this being the go-to operating system for portable gaming and streaming.
