Celtics extend impressive streak with Pistons victory

BOSTON — The Celtics reached a new level of dominance against the Pistons with another resounding victory Thursday night at TD Garden. Boston took a 3-0 lead in the season series with this victory and has now won 12 straight games against the Pistons dating back to February 2022. This streak is the second-longest active winning streak by a team against a opponent currently in the NBA. tying the Clippers’ 12-game winning streak against the Hornets. The Thunder (14 consecutive wins against the Blazers) currently hold the longest active streak in the NBA.

Two of those wins against the Pistons this year came without Jayson Tatum (knee soreness). However, Joe Mazzulla credits his squad for the team’s consistent performance, no matter who is on the field.

“I think it just starts with the guys we have in the locker room,” Mazzulla said. “I think it’s important to know that we have an ego. We just put them in the right place. It’s not that we shouldn’t have them. We should have them provided they are placed in the right place. So I think it comes down to the character of the guys, and I think they have confidence and an understanding of what can lead to long-term success. And I think you have to commit to that every day, and I think the guys work to commit to that.

Pistons coach JB Bickerstaff has only been in charge in Detroit for the Pistons’ last three losses to Boston, but did his best to explain why the Celtics remain such a challenge without their All-Star.

“From an individual tendencies standpoint, it changes some things you do, but they play the same with or without him,” Bickerstaff said. “They move the ball. This is one of the most unselfish teams we’ve seen on a regular basis. They have immense talent all over the court, in the way they space the floor, creating threes and that type of thing.

“So it doesn’t change how we try to protect them or what we try to do.” Obviously this takes an extremely talented guy out of the lineup, but this team is good enough to find a way to beat you with the guys they have.

The Celtics will have another chance to extend their streak against the Pistons on the road on February 26, but they still have a long way to go before setting the NBA record. The Lakers currently hold this mark with 27 consecutive victories against the Sacramento Kings from 1983 to 1988.
