Chilled red wine, adding MSG to foods and refined instant noodles are expected to be the biggest food trends of 2025.

Tis the season to look back at 2024, while preparing for a fresh start on January 1st.

Specifically, the food and drink trends that shaped dinner time this year — and which ones will go viral in 2025.

As Christmas and New Year approach, supermarkets and grocery stores like Ocado typically release their versions of these lists and, unsurprisingly, TikTok has played a major role in influencing the way we eat and drink this year.

Research commissioned by Ocado noted a rise in demand for instant noodles which, by 2024, have gone from a staple often overlooked by students to a chic ingredient that has inspired gourmet chefs and home cooks.

Under the hashtag #ramenhacks, TikTok users have begun experimenting with the humble instant noodles to understand how this versatile dish can be transformed into a flavorful — and healthy — meal with a few easy tweaks.

The search for ‘noodles’ increased by 762.5% year-on-year on Ocado.com, with shoppers heading straight for Nongshim’s Shin Cup and Kimchi Cup instant noodles.

Pistachios also had their moment in the sun this year, with foodies using the versatile green nut to enhance everything from their pesto pasta sauces to ice cream – thanks, in no small part, to Dubai’s viral chocolate bars.

CBD-infused drinks, Shima’s saky spritz drinks and Dirtea’s lion’s mane powder have all made Ocado’s list of the top 12 food trends of 2024.

The supermarket also revealed the three ingredients you’ll likely see everywhere – from Explore pages on Instagram to the aisles of your local grocery store – in 2025:

Sparkling red wine for long summer days

Chill Bill, priced at £9.50, has a red fruit taste with a fresh, light floral undertone, perfect for sipping on a summer sunny day.

Rosé wine is set to disappear in 2025, with Ocado.com noting a whopping 1,233% increase in searches for Chill Bill, a refreshing and sparkling red wine.

Typically reserved for the colder months, red wine is set to see a surge in popularity next summer – thanks to this lighter, chilled alternative.

Dua Lipa elevated olive oil to a delicious ice cream topping in 2024, spawning hundreds of thousands of leisure videos online.

And research from Ocado.com found that our love for olive oil is only set to grow in 2025, as consumers continue to educate themselves about what constitutes good quality oil and how from which we can get the most out of our oils.

Brands like Good Phats, from 200ml (from £6.00, Ocado.com) are leading on this front, with searches for the brand up 24% this year compared to 2023.

‘MSG, obviously’

Ocado.com found that searches for 'MSG' increased by 136% on the website, with shoppers loading up on products like Honest Umami Chilli MSG to give their food an umami twist.

In the space of just one year, monosodium glutamate – or MSG – has managed to shed its bad reputation and regain its place in pantries around the world.

The renaissance of this ingredient, typically used in Chinese cuisine, has been fueled in part by content creator LoganM who helped make MSG mainstream and accessible with his viral cucumber trend on TikTok.

In the spirit of the season, You Magazine food editor Eleanor Maidment has also released her definitive guide to the ingredients that will be taking over your TikTok feeds next year.

His top prediction for the most requested pantry staple in 2025 is Hot Honey, made with chili-infused honey for a “swicy” (sweet and spicy) twist. She recommends drizzling it on pizza, breakfast pancakes served with crispy bacon, or even a bowl of ice cream.

This year, our feeds were filled with aesthetically filmed videos showing creators grating the frozen flesh of fruits like peaches and strawberries over ice cream or yogurt. Expect to see coils of shredded frozen tomatoes atop cheeses such as burrata and mozarella, in a tasty take on the 2024 frozen peach trend.

Other ingredients you’ll be adding to your cart in 2025 include lion’s mane mushrooms – a superfood believed to prevent dementia as well as mild symptoms of anxiety and depression – and blond chocolate.
