Google Maps will delete your location history. Know how to protect it

Google’s Timeline feature, initially known as Location History, will finally go offline on June 9, 2025. Users around the world have received emails from Google informing them of the deadline and reminding them that their location data will be deleted unless it is saved on their computer. device. Google had announced this move last year, with the first deadline being December 1, 2024, but decided to extend it to give users more time to make the changes.

“The timeline is changing and will now be created on your device. As part of this, you will need to choose your data settings by June 9, 2025 to avoid losing tours and itineraries,” the e-read reads. email from Google.

What is timeline?

Timeline is a fun feature that allows users to revisit places they’ve explored and routes they’ve taken in the past. Similar to Google Photos Memories, this is a geographic recap with a log of everywhere you’ve been.

What is changing?

According to the California-based company, Timeline will now be saved independently on each individual smartphone, instead of in the cloud. Tours and places you’ve explored that are older than three months will be automatically deleted unless users take specific steps to save trips.

Additionally, only 90 days of data will be transferred to a user’s device after the deadline expires, which is in six months.

Although Timeline data will be available on users’ devices, it will not be accessible on web browsers. According to the tech giant, since the data displayed on Timeline comes directly from smartphones, it will not be available on Maps on computer web browsers once the data is moved.

How to store Timeline data?

While Google launched the service to increase user privacy, some worry that data about their travels and places they have visited over the years may not be saved. In order to retain existing Timeline data, settings must be updated:

  • Make sure you have Google Maps app version 11.106 or later, Android 6.0 or later.
  • Open the app and click Explore Timeline
  • Tap Next on the map, alerting of the change
  • Choose how many months of Timeline data you want to keep
  • Choose whether you want to continue sending user data to Google
  • Tap Done

Timeline backup data

You can automatically backup your timeline if you need to change devices. When you back up your Timeline data, it saves an encrypted copy of your data on Google’s servers which can then be imported to the new device. To move an existing backup to another device, simply import the backup by going to Settings.
