As the clocks moved back an hour early Sunday morning to standard time, the Change.org petition “Stop Daylight Saving Time in Canada” is generating renewed interest.

“Changing the time twice a year is dangerous for your health,” wrote petition organizer Irene Shone in March 2019.

“Many studies show that changing the clock and staying on Daylight Saving Time negatively impacts our circadian rhythm, causes an increase in strokes and heart attacks, impacts people with depression and seasonal affective disorder and causes more car accidents.

On Thursday, Shone shared an update for supporters who signed the petition, saying she was happy the clock was going back this weekend.

“We are finally at that point in the year where we will return to standard time,” Shone wrote. “I’ve been struggling over the last month with very dark mornings and I’m really looking forward to seeing more morning light before I start work. Please share this petition as widely as possible if you agree that we should keep the time to standard time and not change the clocks to daylight saving time in the spring.

“This Change.org petition has received consistent support for over five years now,” Change.org Canada spokesperson Sarah Dixon said in a statement.

“Few petitions have generated such passionate interest for so long. We are receiving a clear message from many Canadians – more than 87,000 now – that they would like to see an end to daylight saving time.

Shone added to the petition: “Follow scientific research. Do what is right and not just what is easy and misinformed. Don’t change the clocks. Leave them on standard time all year round. Don’t rush.
