New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday addressed the controversy surrounding his father’s remarks regarding his unexpected retirement from international cricket. The famous spinner backed his father’s alleged statement, which suggested humiliation played a role in his surprising decision to retire.

Ashwin’s father reportedly shared with CNN News18 that his son’s abrupt decision to retire could have been a result of disrespect from the team management. Although the specific context is unclear, his statement on Thursday fueled online speculation about a possible rift between the player and the BCCI.

The 38-year-old spinner arrived in Chennai on Thursday morning and responded to a fan’s question on his X page regarding his thoughts on his father’s remarks. Ashwin playfully responded to the speculations, urging everyone to forgive and refrain from disturbing his father.

“My father is not media trained, dey Father enna da ithelaam (What is it?). I never thought you would follow this rich tradition of Dad’s statements,” Ashwin wrote in his X post. “Ask everyone to forgive him and leave him alone.”

Earlier on Thursday, Ashwin’s father revealed his surprise over the bowler’s retirement decision.

“I found out at the last minute too, actually. What was going through his mind, I don’t know,” Ashwin’s father was quoted as saying by CNN News18. “He just announced it. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I didn’t feel any feelings about it. But the way he gave his retirement, part of it I was very happy, part of it I wasn’t happy because he should have continued. “(Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I can’t interfere with it, but the way he gave it, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, perhaps out of humiliation.
