Beloved business owner fights for her life after ‘freak’ car crash on busy highway

MESA (KPHO/Gray News) – A 26-year-old Arizona woman is fighting for her life after being involved in a “freak” car crash on a busy highway.

Family members said Victoria Cardenas owned a ceramics store called Tor Mudthrower.

It’s a business that her mother, Amber, says her daughter is very passionate about.

“She’s a fighter,” Victoria’s mother said. “I know, I have confidence that she will come back. I know my baby will be okay, I know it.

Cardenas was driving east along U.S. 60 when an old pickup truck carrying a flatbed filled with long metal pipes struck her, authorities said.

Amber said her daughter had to be kicked out of her vehicle.

“It’s a miracle she’s alive,” Amber said. “She was stuck down there. There’s not much left of his car.

The truck allegedly lost control, jackknifed, then crossed the center reservation into oncoming traffic, striking Cardena’s car.

She was rushed to hospital with multiple skull fractures and broken bones.

She is currently in a coma.

“I just try to keep her calm because I know it’s scary,” Amber said. “I know she hears me, when she hears my voice, I just say mommy is here, you’re in the hospital and you’re going to get better, don’t be afraid, I’m here.”

Friends set up a GoFundMe page to help Victoria while she is in the hospital.

Everyone is hoping and praying that she recovers.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the driver of the truck was cited for failing to control his vehicle to avoid a collision and for not wearing a seat belt.

There may be additional charges.
