The firefighter was on the roof of a three-story building in the 800 block of North Hamlin Avenue in Humboldt Park when he fell to the basement, Chicago Fire officials said.

The injury occurred while CFD crews were responding to a fire that broke out shortly after 6 p.m.

The injured firefighter was transported to Stroger Hospital with serious injuries caused by a fall.

It was really crazy and everyone was screaming, “It’s a fire, it’s a fire,” but no one took out their phone to call 911, so that was my first thought.

Fire officials said all residents were able to safely evacuate on their own before crews arrived.

Eight people who lived in the building were not injured, but they were displaced, CFD officials said. The Red Cross intervened to help them.

The Chicago Fire Department said they faced storage conditions on the second floor, so there were a lot of things inside, which made the fire worse.

Witness April Rimmer was in the street when the fire broke out and she called 911.

“It was really crazy and everyone was screaming, ‘It’s a fire, it’s a fire,’ but no one took out their phone to call 911, so that was my first thought,” said Rimmer. “And I called 911 as soon as I could. It’s sad…so sad.”

ABC7 also learned that an Ecuadorian migrant family was living in the building. They said they had been there for about six months now and had lost everything.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. No further information was available.
