Gareth Anscombe: Gloucester fly-half inspired by Wales comeback

Anscombe was revitalized by his move to Gloucester where he linked up with Welsh half-back Tomos Williams.

“When I arrived at Gloucester it felt like I was meant to be there and it was refreshing,” Anscombe said.

“The most important thing is to try to play regularly, spend time on the pitch and stay calm.

“It’s been lovely to catch up with Tommy again, we’ve known each other from our Cardiff days. He’s been outstanding for Gloucester, one of our best players recently and he’s world class.”

While Dan Biggar retired after the World Cup and Anscombe’s injury, Sam Costelow, Ioan Lloyd and Ben Thomas started the last eight Tests, all of which Wales lost in 2024.

Costelow and Thomas are the team’s other opening options for November.

“My aim is to try and play for Wales again and bring some experience to this younger team,” Anscombe said.

“We need to get some wins here and that helps you enjoy what you do.

“We are not far from it. If we can improve a few performances that bring victories, suddenly everyone starts to relax a little. Winning is a habit, but so is losing.

“We just have to understand what it takes to win at this level.”
