Meet Mindy and Bette, Christmas Pudding Makers for a Total of 145 Years

St. John’s Evangelical Anglican Church is celebrating 75 years of its Christmas fundraising.

The downtown Kitchener church has produced the holiday favorite as a charitable fundraiser since 1949.

Mindy Hurley, 99, has been there every step of the way, rolling up her sleeves for the first time at age 25.

“It’s the camaraderie, people,” Hurley said when asked why she keeps coming back.

Bette Moore, 96, sits a few spots away from Mindy on the pudding assembly line. She has been helping to make pudding for 70 years.

“I think the pudding factory is a great source of income, but it also brings people together,” Moore said.

The Church brought together these two women, friends for several decades.

“We used to go on trips together,” Hurley said, describing their close friendship.

They say church community and leading an active social life kept them strong well into their 90s.

“It’s very important, that’s where I had a lot of beautiful friends that keep me going,” Hurley said.

“I think we are all so different, but because we are part of St John’s and we love the church and the friendships we have had here,” Moore added.

Hurley says as long as she can, she’ll come back.

“Well, certainly, I wouldn’t dare let them down.”

Last year the church sold out of its pudding very early.

This year, organizers have gone further and will be selling pudding to the public starting Saturday, November 9 at 9 a.m.

It will be first come, first served at the Duke Street entrance.

This is not the first time that CTV News mand find Hurley.

She is known for follow traditions.
