Superior Arts Youth Theater presents “Finding Nemo Jr.” to life at Forest Roberts Theater

Higher Youth Arts Theater will present Finding Nemo Jr.., a musical adaptation of Pixar’s beloved animated film, opening Nov. 7 at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theater. The SAYT production brings together young talent from across the Marquette area, diving into the vibrant world of the ocean and chronicling the journey of Marlin and Dory as they search for Marlin’s lost son, Nemo.

Actors Grant Ottaway And Ellia Marquardsonwho play the roles of Marlin and Dory, shared their excitement for the upcoming show. “It’s largely the same as the movie,” Grant says. “There are a few changes, like the seagulls playing a bigger role, which is great since my brother plays one of them.” These subtle adaptations enrich the stage version, designed for the pleasure of young performers and families.

The cast includes a mix of ages, allowing the young actors to experience the thrill of bringing to life a story that is dear to them. “For little kids especially, it’s really fun to be a part of something that they’ve watched,” Ellia explained. The cast, while smaller than some previous SAYT productions, is a tight-knit and enthusiastic team dedicated to recreating the ocean world of Finding Nemo.

The underwater setting is brought to life with imaginative props and decor. Grant highlighted some impressive elements, like a boat modeled after Edmund Fitzgerald’s, a nod to the Great Lakes region that adds a unique local touch. “The set is made to look underwater, but you also have this big boat for a scene with the sharks,” Grant said. Her mother, who helped design the props, helped create these intricate details, adding depth to the underwater adventure.

In addition to the main performances, SAYT offers a family production where accommodations are made for younger audiences and those with sensory needs. The house lights stay dim, the doors stay open, and fidget toys are available to make the show accessible to everyone. “It’s a great option for little kids who can’t sit still,” noted Ellia, emphasizing SAYT’s commitment to inclusivity.

When asked what they’re most looking forward to, both actors agreed: It’s the joy of seeing a beloved film come to life in a whole new way. “It’s a really fun and upbeat show with lots of dance numbers,” Ellia said. “Everyone who goes will have a great time.”

Finding Nemo Jr. promises to be a heartwarming, dynamic, family-friendly production that showcases the talent and energy of the Superior Arts Youth Theater cast. Performances will take place from November 7, with tickets available from the Forest Roberts Theater box office. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this enchanting underwater adventure brought to the stage by some of Marquette’s finest young performers.
