Offensive line shakeup highlights Roughriders’ roster shift for West Final

Some roster changes for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they travel to Winnipeg on Saturday in the Western Final with a Gray Cup berth on the line.

Left tackle Trevor Reid will miss this week’s game with a knee injury. Reid started each of the Roughriders’ 18 regular-season games and last week’s Western semifinal against British Columbia. Reid was the team’s candidate for Most Outstanding Rookie this season.

Replacing Reid will be Peter Godber, who returned last week after being sidelined with an ankle injury since the start of September. With Godber back at center, Logan Ferland will move to right tackle and Trevon Tate will move to left tackle in place of Reid. Ryan Sceviour will be the team’s sixth offensive lineman. The former Calgary Stampeder has been out since August with an elbow injury.

Defensive lineman Anthony Lanier II will be inserted into the lineup as part of the defensive line rotation. Last week, Lanier II was healthy as Micah Johnson and Miles Brown were the starters at defensive tackle.

After receiving a bye last week thanks to their first place finish in the West Division, they will have safety Brandon Alexander back in their starting lineup. Linebacker Kyrie Wilson is a game-time decision after sitting out 11 games.

Saturday’s game will mark the fourth time this season that Saskatchewan will face Winnipeg in 2024. On July 19, Saskatchewan defeated Winnipeg 19-9. The Blue Bombers would go on to win the season series between their Prairie rivals after sweeping back-to-back series in early September.

Since their last loss in Winnipeg, the Roughriders have managed to turn things around with a 4-1 record (including the loss to the Calgary Stampeders on October 26 when the team’s playoff fate was determined).

Even with a reasonable weather forecast in Winnipeg on Saturday, both teams will look to utilize their ground attack. Winnipeg will have Brady Oliveria carrying the stone. Oliveria is the West division candidate for the title of Most Outstanding Player and Canadian this year. While Saskatchewan will counter with its two-headed monster in AJ Ouellette and Ryquell Armstead.

Kickoff for Saturday’s Western final is 5:30 p.m.

In the Eastern final, the Montreal Alouettes will host the Toronto Argonauts. The Argonauts improved after beating the Ottawa Rouge et Noir last week.
