Public invited to share feedback on downtown Mastic Beach redevelopment plans

Brookhaven Town announced it will hold a public meeting Thursday evening to discuss plans for the long-awaited redevelopment of downtown Mastic Beach.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will take place at 6:30 p.m. at William Floyd High School, 240 Mastic Beach Road. at Mastic beach.

City officials said in a news release Friday that Jericho-based prime contractor Beechwood Organization will present a proposed land use plan for the redevelopment area, which includes a half-mile stretch -mile of Neighborhood Road – the hamlet’s business district.

Brookhaven and Beechwood officials said the plan includes a mix of townhouses, condominiums, shops and parking areas.

The neighborhood currently includes small stores, restaurants, and bars, as well as newly constructed buildings, including an ambulance company and a branch of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley community library.

The downtown redevelopment has received broad support from residents as well as business and civil society leaders.

Officials expect redevelopment to be spurred by Suffolk County construction. Forge River Watershed Sewer Districtwhich includes sewer connections essential to the addition of new homes and restaurants.

The redevelopment plan includes up to 140 properties, mostly aging businesses and vacant lots, city officials said.

Meeting participants will be invited to participate in small group discussions with representatives from Beechwood and Brookhaven to discuss details of the plan and provide feedback.

In a statement, Supervisor Dan Panico, a Mastic Beach native, said he hoped the plan would “write a new, positive chapter in the history of Mastic Beach.”

Mastic Beach was an incorporated village for about seven years before dissolution in 2017 after years of budget crises and internal political struggles.

City officials launched a redevelopment plan in 2018 aimed at rebuilding downtown and attracting new owners. According to the latest available figures from the 2020 census, Mastic Beach has a population of 14,199.

Beechwood was selected in 2021 to support the project master developer.
