What is open and closed on Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is Monday and events are taking place in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area to honor those who served Canada in wartime.

The armistice agreement was signed on Monday, November 11, 1918 between Germany and the Allied forces in Paris and the ceasefire came into effect at 11 a.m. Canada celebrated its first Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day as it is now known, in 1919.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, you are asked to pause for two minutes of silence.

Several official events are organized in Toronto to mark Remembrance Day:

  • The 96th annual sunrise service will be held at 8 a.m. at Prospect Cemetery on St. Clair Avenue West.
  • Fort York National Historic Site will hold ceremonies beginning at 10:40 a.m.
  • Ceremonies at East York Civic Center Memorial Gardens, Etobicoke Civic Center Cenotaph, York Cemetery Cenotaph in North York, Scarborough War Memorial, York Civic Center Cenotaph and Cenotaph from Old Town Hall are scheduled for 10:45 a.m.

Ceremonies will also take place at the Ontario Veterans Memorial on the Queen’s Park lawn starting at 10:45 a.m. You can watch a live stream of this ceremony. here.

The Toronto Zoo will hold its 39th Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Waterside Theater starting at 10:55 a.m. Veterans in uniform (or with medals, patches or other insignia of military affiliation) and uniformed serving members of the armed forces, police, firefighters and paramedics. Services will receive free entry to the zoo while members of the public who attend can receive a 50% discount. the price of entry.

In Mississauga, a ceremony will take place at the Mississauga Civic Center Community Memorial at 10:30 a.m.

Brampton is hosting a parade and ceremony at the Ken Whillans Square Cenotaph starting at 10:30 a.m.

Although Remembrance Day is considered a statutory holiday in most provinces and territories, it is not recognized as a statutory holiday in Ontario, meaning some regular services will not be available. Here is a list of what is open and closed in Toronto:

TRANSIT

The TTC will operate on a regular schedule Monday. Buses, trams and metros will take a two-minute break at 11 a.m. as a memorial tribute.

GO Transit will operate on a regular schedule on Monday.

BEER/LCBO

Beer store And LCBO locations will be closed Monday morning and will open at noon.

BANKS / GOVERNMENT SERVICES / MAIL

Canada Post will be closed on Monday so there will be no mail collection or delivery. Private sector deliveries (Purolator, UPS, DHL, etc.) will operate normally.

All major banks will be closed but ATMs and online banking will be available.

Federal government services and offices will be closed on Monday.

GROCERY STORE / PHARMACIES

Grocery stores and pharmacies will operate at regular hours.

SHOPPING CENTERS

Shopping centers such as Eaton Centre, Yorkdale Mall, Dufferin Mall, Pacific Mall, Square One, Scarborough Town Centre, Fairview Mall, Vaughan Mills, Upper Canada Mall and Sherway Gardens will all be open normal hours.
