Traffic stop turns into drug and weapons arrest in Winnipeg, police say

Winnipeg police conducted a traffic stop on Sunday that led to a drug and weapons seizure around 7 a.m. at Mountain Avenue and McPhillips Street.

The Winnipeg Police Service says a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab occupied by four suspects began speeding when they noticed the police traffic stop.

Officers were able to catch up and conduct a traffic stop in the 600 block of McPhillips Street. Police said upon speaking with the occupants, a folding knife and a bulletproof vest were found in plain view.

All occupants were placed under arrest without incident and removed from the vehicle.

Police add that upon further inspection, the body armor also contained a loaded 9mm handgun with a falsified serial number and seven rounds of ammunition.

A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of the following items: 163 grams of methamphetamine, 3.6 grams of fentanyl, three grams of cocaine, packaging materials and approximately $9,300 in cash.

Kevin Raymond Scott Yestrau, 42, of Winnipeg, was arrested and charged with several charges related to weapons, firearms, trafficking and proceeds of crime, and was detained.

A 28-year-old woman, a 31-year-old man and a 41-year-old man, all from Winnipeg, face similar charges and have been released.
