Bobcat Carelessly Drinking From a Birdbath Looks Like the World’s Largest Domestic Cat

Historically dry conditions have swept across much of Texas this fall, as they have in other parts of the country. When rains are scarce, creatures around the world look for a place to quench their thirst. The usual puddles and small streams are dry, and it is important to prepare water dishes for wildlife or fill birdbaths. The animal in this video is not a common sight to see in a birdbath, but hey, even kittens are thirsty.

In this video we see a beautiful bobcat passing by a birdbath at the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center southwest of Dallas, Texas. The animal looks like a giant beast in the clip, but don’t worry, it’s just a nifty angle on camera.

“Look at the beautiful creature that visited our birdbath!” The center writes in the caption of this video. “The camera angle makes this Bobcat look huge but it’s just a normal size, don’t worry. We love sharing a water resource with all the wildlife on our reserve.

In the comments, people can’t help but comment on the beauty and wholesomeness of this rare sighting. Although bobcats have a wide distribution throughout the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico, it’s always a wonder to spot one up close.

And of course, some people can’t resist the urge to make jokes.

“Yum! Tastes like bluebird with a touch of wren!” said one.

All about the American bobcat

Bobcats are a type of lynx native to North America. The name derives from their short, stubby tail compared to most other cat species. Bobcats are brownish gray in color and usually have spots and bands on their fur, with large, mostly black ears and a black tip on the tail. They are about twice the size of normal domestic cats and, although they look adorable, they are incredibly fierce, capable of leaping twelve feet and running up to twenty-five miles an hour in search of of prey.

Due to their wide distribution throughout North America, they are considered an animal of low conservation concern, although loss of habitat and food supplies is causing their numbers to decline. Bobcat hunting is legal in many states, but it often has limits, seasons, and requires licenses. Laws vary by state.

Bobcats are largely solitary creatures, although they pair up during the mating season. A female bobcat typically gives birth to two to four cubs per litter, and bobcat cubs begin traveling and hunting with their mothers at around three to five months of age. During their first year, they moved out on their own. Bobcats’ primary diet is small animals like rabbits or ducks, although they will even eat larger prey and are known to attack the sheep.

Helping wildlife in times of drought

Drought conditions can be stressful for wildlife and installing birdbaths and other water stations can be a big help to animals that may be in danger. looking for water. Water sources should be regularly cleaned and refilled to help prevent the spread of disease and prevent stagnation.

If you have the option, try installing a wildlife camera like the one used here. You might be surprised by the diversity of creatures who actually visits your birdbath.
