Eight candidates for Regina mayor stopped by Morning Edition to talk about their visions for the next four years. Three other candidates did not choose to participate in the video. Residents will vote to elect the mayor, councilors and school commissioners on November 13.

Regina’s civic election campaign has identified municipal spending and plans to replace aging civic assets, such as Lawson Pool and the central branch of the Regina Public Library, as key issues.

There was no shortage of candidates in the Queen City, with 11 candidates for mayor.

Attendees included outgoing Mayor Sandra Masters, Councilwoman Lori Bresciani, nonprofit leader Bill Pratt and mechanical engineer Chad Bachynski, among others.

A considerable change is coming to the council, as six councilors have chosen not to run again. This means that regardless of Wednesday’s results, there will be at least six new councilors in Henry Baker Hall.

Fifty-three people applied for the 10 municipal councilor positions.

Meanwhile, Saskatoon’s municipal election has placed greater emphasis on community safety and plans to revitalize the downtown core.

Like many cities across Canada, Saskatoon has seen an increase in the number of homeless people and the location of a shelter in the city’s Fairhaven neighborhood has been a point of contention.

With incumbent Mayor Charlie Clark not seeking re-election, Saskatoon voters had a choice of five candidates: Don Atchison, Cynthia Block, Mike Harder, Cary Tarasoff and Gordon Wyant. A total of 45 candidates competed for 11 seats on Saskatoon city council.
