Is growth too fast for the community

GATESVILLE, Texas (KXXV) — “If we continue this large pattern of growth at a substantial rate, it will only get worse,” said longtime Coryell County resident Julianna Blanchard.

Blanchard’s view will soon change. After decades of seeing nothing but fields, she will now look out her windows and see new houses.

“I’ve lived here since I was 14,” Blanchard said.

“Over the years, Gatesville has grown. It has not grown at the rate it is currently poised to grow. Larger areas like Temple and Waco come out this way because people want to feel small and country and escape the hustle and bustle.

According to a county survey, 62.2 percent of residents are uncomfortable with the pace of development. Yet, with several housing developments already under construction, our local leaders are unsure if this will be enough.

“If you want to live outside the hustle and bustle of the city, Gatesville has become the next place. My philosophy has always been to want positive growth,” said Coryell County Judge Roger Miller.

Miller said even if the county couldn’t handle it, they would do everything they could to support it. The focus will be on roads and water sources.

Still, Blanchard said she wants growth to happen at a slower pace. She thinks this would give infrastructure time to catch up and the community to adapt.

“We have no problem with growth,” Blanchard said. However, growth and the pace at which it grows will pose challenges.
