Women’s March protesters gather at Utah State Capitol as election nears

SALT LAKE CITY — Protesters cheered, marched and rallied Saturday morning from Washington Square Park to the Utah State Capitol in support of women’s rights and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Brianna Green, a mother of two daughters, is one of hundreds of protesters who joined the march taking place just days before Election Day on November 5.

The rally was part of a series of more than 400 marches across the country.

“They are my world. Their rights are in danger,” Green said. “I am here to fight for their future the same way my grandparents fought for mine. »

As Green walked, she thought about the future of her two little girls.

“Unfortunately, I have to continue this fight for my daughters so that one day, I hope, they no longer have to be here fighting for their daughters and their granddaughters,” she said. “This is a fight we should no longer have to fight.”

The future of women’s right to abortion was one of many issues Green and other protesters fought for during the march.

Merrille Boyack, president of the Abortion-Free Utah Coalition, however, sees the issue differently.

“I think there are a lot of people who are unfortunately misled or deluded into thinking that the right to kill babies is a good thing,” Boyack said. “It breaks my heart.”

Other themes protesters demonstrated for on Saturday were equal pay, creating a path to citizenship and LGBTQ+ rights, among others.

Protester Glenn Wright calls this election historic.

“This is an important election. Every election we’ve had over the last few cycles, everyone says this is the most important election ahead of us,” Glenn said. “They just seem to be getting bigger. This could have disastrous consequences for the country.”
