Zomato Launches NEW ‘District’ App: Book Movies, Restaurants & Events Seamlessly on iOS & Android

Food delivery platform Zomato has introduced its ‘District’ app for iOS and Android users. The app will provide dining services to customers and book tickets for movies, sports, live shows, etc.

After availing food delivery services via Zomato and fast commerce sector, Blinkit, the company launched its third outlet service segment through the District app.

In August, Zomato acquired the entertainment and ticketing businesses of Pay For 2,048.4 crore or $244 million to strengthen its exit vertical.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyalin the Q1FY25 shareholder letter, said, “Today, Zomato and Blinkit are our two leading consumer businesses, and both cater to the needs of customers at home. However, we also have one of the largest outlet companies in India. Our restaurant business that helps our customers discover restaurants when they want to go out and dine out. This restaurant business is now operating at a rate of over $500 million in annualized GOV and is already profitable.

Goyal explained the company’s intention to expand its outlet business as well.

“We believe there is an opportunity to further expand our outing offering, building on our catering business. Additional use cases for customers in the release space include movies, sports ticketing, live shows, shopping, stays, etc., some of which we have already launched or are in the process of to build as we speak,” Goyal said.

“Creating a single destination app for going out could be a game-changer for each of these use cases, and that’s exactly what we intend to do with our new District app (by Zomato). If we execute this correctly, we believe the company will become the third major B2C company to spin out from Zomato,” he added.

Zomato’s ticketing services through its District app would face competition from Reliance-backed BookMyShow.

Recently, the Zomato board approved the increase 8,500 crore through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) as a buffer to strengthen finances in a competitive market, the company said in its Q2FY25 income statement.

Meanwhile, Zomato on Sunday launched a new feature aimed at reducing food waste by offering customers canceled orders at “unbeatable” prices. According to Deepinder Goyal, the company experiences around 4 lakh order cancellations every month.
