Two British nationals have died and a third was seriously injured after their car crashed into a suspected drug trafficker’s speedboat which came loose from a trailer onto a vehicle traveling in front of them on a Spanish motorway.

The trio were the first to hit the ‘narcolancha’ when it ended up on the tarmac near the resort of La Manga.

Police today confirmed the nationalities of the victims, saying eight other people in six cars traveling behind them were injured in the massive pileup.

The driver of the vehicle that was transporting the suspect vessel on a trailer fled the scene and was still being chased by police today.

The fatal accident occurred last night around 9:30 p.m. on RM-12, a two-lane highway known colloquially as La Manga Highway, near El Algar between La Manga and Cartagena.

The local press first described the two deceased people as two women, saying this morning that they were “foreign tourists” aged around forty.

A Civil Guard spokesperson confirmed the nationalities of the two men at midday today, saying they and the seriously injured victim “were British men aged between 47 and 54”.

The spokesperson said: “The accident happened last night around 9:30 p.m. on the RM-12 around the municipality of El Algar.

A semi-rigid boat on a trailer that a vehicle was pulling became detached and ended up on the road across both lanes.

“A car traveling behind it with three British people aged between 47 and 54 on board crashed into the ship. Two of these people died and another, who was the driver, was seriously injured.

“Eight other people traveling in six vehicles behind them also hit the boat and were injured.

The driver of the vehicle traveling with the outboard on the trailer fled the scene.

“He has not been arrested yet. The boat he was transporting which ended up on the highway has all the characteristics of a so-called ‘narco lancha’ involved in drug trafficking and an investigation is underway.’

It was not clear today whether the unnamed British nationals were on vacation or living in the area.

It is also unclear whether they were traveling in a rental car or if they owned the car they were in.

A spokesperson for a regional emergency response coordination center confirmed that the two people who died were British men and not women as initially reported.

In a statement, they said: “Emergency health services were unable to save the lives of two people who died from their injuries during a multiple traffic accident on RM-12 bound for La Manga, occurred in the municipality of El Algar.

“We received more than 30 calls yesterday alerting us of the accident at 9:32 p.m. local time. Witnesses spoke of eight vehicles involved in the pileup, apparently caused by a Zodiac semi-rigid falling from a trailer it was being transported on.

“Several callers told us that some vehicles had rolled several times and that there were people trapped and injured to varying degrees.

“Five ambulances with emergency medical personnel were sent to the scene, as well as Civil Protection officers, firefighters and Civil Guard patrols.

“We can confirm the death of two people.

“A 21-year-old man was assisted on site. Four people, two women aged 18 and 55 and two men aged 19 and 29, were taken to Santa Lucia Hospital in Cartagena while a 51-year-old man was taken to La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.
