Mobile City Council committee set to discuss proposed ‘panhandling’ ordinance

MOBILE, AlabamaWALA) – The Mobile City Council is scheduled to hold a public safety committee meeting Tuesday regarding three proposed ordinances.

The Council’s Director of Communications and Community Engagement states that the purpose of this meeting is to discuss ordinances to amend Section 41.5, “Loitering in Parks or Playgrounds,” Section V, “ Panhandling” and Section 57.73, “Sidewalk Obstructions,” of the Mobile, Alabama City Code.

In a story on FOX10 News last month, we reported that Mayor Sandy Stimpson was sponsoring all three and that the goal was to amend the ordinances to redefine some outdated policies in the city code.

City officials said the changes would give Mobile’s new Homeless Outreach Team additional tools to approach and interact with homeless people, making it easier to connect them to local services.
