Erdogan to present plan to G20 to freeze war and postpone Ukraine’s NATO membership

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has prepared a proposal to freeze the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Bloomberg reportedciting informed sources. The plan is expected to be presented at the G20 leaders’ meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

Erdogan’s initiative would include Ukraine delaying talks on NATO membership for at least a decade, a move described as a “concession to Putin.”

The proposal also suggests creating a demilitarized zone in eastern Donbass, overseen by international peacekeeping forces, and offering military support to Ukraine as compensation for its postponement by NATO.

According to Turkish officials interviewed by Bloomberg, while this plan may be difficult for Ukraine to accept, they view it as “the most realistic approach” to achieving a stable ceasefire.

The proposal calls for postponing discussions on the status of Russian-occupied territories in order to focus on an immediate de-escalation of the war.

Erdogan reportedly aims to hold peace talks in Istanbul, using intelligence suggesting Ukraine could suffer significant territorial losses if hostilities persist in the coming months.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not attend the G20 summit, as Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva refused to invite him.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also stepped down, saying he didn’t want to “disrupt the forum” with “talks” around the international arrest warrant against him.
