Daniel Jones could keep Cowboys in conversation, but runs counter to rebuilding

What reality does Dallas Cowboys exist in ? Are they the glory hounds who do everything for attention, like Jerry Jones, many think? Or is this the intentionally bad, rebuilding club they presented themselves to be in 2024? The answer may lie in whether or not they will present a waiver offer for Suddenly free quarterback Daniel Jones.

On Monday, at 4 p.m. Eastern, the NFL will announce the team Jones was claimed by. Released Friday by the New York Giants, teams had the weekend to stake his contract. This won’t happen. Scout safety QB-4, former starter Brian Daboll, was released as requested after the team decided not to play with his $23 million injury guarantee for 2025. All club that stakes his contract would inherit that risk, so he’s going to be a street free agent once that window closes. THE The Dallas Cowboys are one of many teams one could argue that we should try to sign a deal with Jones.

Obviously, the Cowboys will be without Dak Prescott for the rest of the season. Signing Daniel Jones is something Jerry and Stephen Jones need to discuss to some extent, but the seriousness of that conversation is a matter of perspective.

Jones is not good. He is better than Cooper RushHowever, and like the rest of Dallas the list is doing its best to be healthyhe would be promoted to the most important job in sport. Dallas’ chances of making the playoffs are so low that it would be one of the most told stories in the NFL if they could figure things out and lead the standings to a 10-7 record. It’s almost impossible with Rush, it was damn near impossible if Prescott miraculously healed, and somewhere in between with Daniel Jones and whatever learning curve would come with a signing.

But signing Daniel Jones would certainly keep Jones owners in the spotlight, and many people believe that’s their top priority. With the late Thanksgiving afternoon window featuring the Cowboys and Giants, the conversation would be incredibly interesting for a matchup between two teams with a total of five wins through 11 weeks of the season.

There’s no reason for anyone to pay attention to Rush against Tommy DeVito outside of the hardcore fandom and “oh, the TV’s on in the background” with Nana Helen’s macaroni and cheese getting devoured.

From that perspective, signing Jones is worth something to Dallas. However, an upgrade to QB Jones would likely mean at least one or two wins the team couldn’t get otherwise, and that goes against the idea of rebuilding.

The truth is that Dallas losing as many games as possible will help speed up his rehabilitation. Higher draft picks, especially in a lightweight draft like the one projected in 2025, mean more tickets to the April lottery. More options means more chances of finding the diamonds in the rough. From this point of view, the financial increase brought by the free advertising of the Daniel Jones brand is in opposition to the “mission” of improving the team in the long term.

Separating for a minute the idea of QB Jones being a contender’s backup, it makes sense that he would want to start in Dallas. What does owner Jones want most?
