Latest US elections: Donald Trump holds rally at iconic New York venue – as Kamala Harris hits must-win state | US News

A comedian has come under fire for making an offensive joke about Puerto Rico and Latin Americans at Donald Trump’s rally tonight in New York.

Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” on stage.

“I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of trash in the middle of the ocean right now,” he said.

“I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

A loud “ooh” could be heard from the crowd, which seemed to drown out the sound of laughter.

He also said he welcomes migrants to the United States “with open arms” – before adding “and by open arms I mean like this…” and moving his arms in front of him, as if to say “No”.

“These Latinos also like to make babies, just know that’s what they do,” he also said.

“It is not possible to withdraw, they do not do that, they enter as they did in our country.”

Mr Trump has been regularly criticized for his rhetoric on migrants and has said he would carry out the largest deportation in US history if he wins the election.

‘Know that’s what they think of you’

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent and born in New York, responded to the comments during a livestream with Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz.

“When you have an asshole calling Puerto Rico ‘floating trash,’ know that’s what they think of you,” she said.

“That’s what they think of anyone who makes less money than them.”
