Alberta SPCA says care costs more than double in 2024

The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says animal care costs have reached $1 million this year.

That figure represents veterinary care and treatment costs only and has more than doubled since last year, officials say.

The SPCA says the rise in costs is due to an increase in the number of animals seized or surrendered this year as well as pressure on the animal welfare system, which sees animals remain in custody for a period prolonged.
