Colorado Secretary of State Releases Partial Passwords for Election Equipment

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office posted a spreadsheet on its website that “inappropriately included” partial passwords for parts of the state’s voting systems, the department announced Tuesday.

The Colorado Republican Party first announced the incident in a press release earlier today, including an affidavit claiming to find the error. The name of the person who signed the affidavit has been redacted. They said they found a publicly posted spreadsheet on the secretary of state’s website containing an inventory of voting systems used across the state.

When the user clicked “show” on the spreadsheet tabs, they found hidden tabs that appeared to display passwords to certain voting system components. In a letter to Secretary of State Jena Griswold, GOP Chairman Dave Williams asked her to confirm that passwords had been changed and other security protocols were being followed.

“If, however, you fail to provide the necessary assurances that our elections are secure, we stand ready to encourage county officials across the state to fulfill their duty to decertify any election machine that has a password on the published list,” Williams wrote.

He called the leak “shocking” and a sign of “significant incompetence and negligence.” Griswold is a longtime Republican Party issue. anger for her vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump and electoral conspiracies.

In an unsigned press release from Griswold’s office, officials wrote: “This does not pose an immediate threat to election security in Colorado, nor will it impact how ballots are cast votes are counted. »
